African Wild Dog

I first saw this African wild dog on Discovery Channel, slowly walking across the endless grassland.

It wasn’t running or chasing anything. Just walking, quietly, under the warm African sun.

There was something about it that really stayed with me. So alone, but not lonely. So free, and completely at peace with where it was.

I think that’s what I wanted to capture in this painting — that quiet kind of freedom, when you don’t need to rush anywhere. You just keep walking, and somehow, the whole world feels wide open.

J’ai vu ce lycaon pour la première fois sur Discovery Channel, marchant lentement à travers la savane infinie.

Il ne courait pas, ne poursuivait rien. Il marchait, simplement, tranquillement, sous le chaud soleil d’Afrique.

Quelque chose en lui m’a profondément marquée. Si seul, sans être solitaire. Si libre, et entièrement en paix avec l’endroit où il se trouvait.

Je crois que c’est ce que j’ai voulu saisir dans cette peinture : cette liberté tranquille, quand on n’a besoin de se presser nulle part. On continue simplement d’avancer et, d’une certaine façon, le monde entier semble grand ouvert.
